DESCRIPTION:

A lock nut, also known as a locking nut or self-locking nut, is a type of fastener used to secure other components in place by preventing them from loosening due to vibration, rotation, or other forces.

Lock nuts are designed with special features that create resistance or locking mechanisms to keep them firmly in position on threaded bolts, screws, or other threaded components.

The primary purpose of a lock nut is to prevent unintended loosening of the nut, which can lead to equipment failure or safety hazards.

CLASSIFICATION:

There are 2 common types of locking nuts including:

Nylon Insert Lock Nuts (Nyloc Nuts):

These nuts have a nylon ring (insert) inside the nut that deforms when the nut is tightened onto a threaded shaft. The nylon insert creates friction and resistance, preventing the nut from backing off.

All-Metal Lock Nuts:

These nuts rely on metal-to-metal contact for locking, often featuring distorted threads or a deformed center.
