Split Washer

DESCRIPTION:

It’s called a “split” washer because it has a split or helical cut that creates a spring-like action when the washer is compressed.

Here’s how a split washer works:

1. Construction: A split washer is typically a flat metal washer with a split cut that runs from the outer edge toward the center. This cut creates two ends or “legs” that can flex apart when the washer is compressed.
2. Function: When a split washer is placed under a nut or bolt head and the fastener is tightened, the washer flattens out slightly. This compression causes the two legs of the washer to exert a spring force in opposite directions.
3. Locking Effect: The spring force generated by the split washer pushes against the fastener and the mating surface. This creates friction and tension, which helps prevent the nut or bolt from loosening due to vibrations or external forces.

However, it’s important to note that split washers have limitations and may not be as effective as other locking mechanisms like lock nuts or thread-locking adhesives in some applications. They are more commonly used in household and light-duty applications where preventing loosening is a secondary concern.

In heavy-duty or critical applications, such as those in aerospace or automotive industries, engineers often opt for more reliable locking methods because split washers may not provide the level of security required.

Despite their limitations, split washers can still be a useful and cost-effective means of adding some additional resistance to loosening in various fastening situations.
