DESCRIPTION:

A rivet nut, also known as a blind rivet nut or threaded insert, is a fastener used to create a threaded connection in materials where it may not be possible to create threads by traditional means, such as tapping or welding.

Rivet nuts are typically used in sheet metal, plastic, or other thin materials that are not thick enough to support threads on their own.

Other names: Blind Rivet Nut, Rivnut, threaded insert

WORKING:

Here’s how a rivet nut works:

  1. Installation: A rivet nut is a hollow, cylindrical piece of metal with an internally threaded hole at one end and a flange or head at the other end. To install a rivet nut, a hole is drilled or punched into the material where the threaded connection is needed.
  2. Insertion: The rivet nut is inserted into the hole from one side of the material. The side with the flange or head is on the opposite side of the material, ensuring that the rivet nut is positioned correctly.
  3. Compression: To secure the rivet nut in place, a special tool called a rivet nut tool or rivet nut gun is used. This tool compresses the open end of the rivet nut, causing it to deform and grip the material tightly. As this deformation occurs, the material is captured between the flange or head and the deformed portion of the rivet nut, creating a secure, threaded connection.
  4. Threaded Insert: Once the rivet nut is installed, it provides a threaded insert in the material. This allows you to easily attach bolts, screws, or other threaded fasteners to the material, providing a strong and reliable connection.

Rivet nuts are commonly used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, and furniture manufacturing, where they offer a practical solution for adding threads to thin or fragile materials without damaging them. They come in various sizes, materials (such as steel, aluminum, or brass), and styles to suit different applications.

CLASSIFICATION:

Rivet nuts are classified into different shapes based on the design of their outer profile. Two common classifications of rivet nuts are round and hexagonal (hex) rivet nuts:

Round Rivet Nuts:

Round rivet nuts have a circular outer shape. They are typically easier to install and provide a more universal fit since they do not have any flat sides. Round rivet nuts are often preferred when aesthetics or appearance is not a primary concern.

Hexagonal (Hex) Rivet Nuts:

Hex rivet nuts have a six-sided outer profile, resembling a hexagon. This design provides a flat surface with six corners, which can be advantageous for certain applications.

Hex rivet nuts are particularly useful when you need to prevent rotation or twisting of the inserted fastener, as the flat sides provide stability. Additionally, the hex shape allows for easier tightening and loosening using a wrench or a socket.

The choice between round and hex rivet nuts depends on the specific requirements of your project. Consider factors such as the material being fastened, the desired appearance, the need for torque resistance, and the type of tooling you have available for installation when selecting the appropriate rivet nut shape.

Both round and hexagonal rivet nuts are readily available at Nam An Fastener in various sizes and materials to suit a wide range of applications.
